Description:
Parents of teens usually agree that it’s important to build independence in their teens, but many don’t have a clear picture of how to do this in a healthcare setting. It can be challenging for parents to know when and how they can prepare their teens for a lifetime of investing in their own health. This video, created by the UMHS Adolescent Health Initiative, provides parent and teen perspectives along with helpful strategies from AHI’s Medical Director, Dr. Maggie Riley. For more parent stories, you can view the Extended Version of this video. In addition, check out the companion video, Teen Self-Advocacy: How to be your own healthcare advocate (https://youtu.be/W4C3mLDOjnU), which was created by teens, for teens, to help them learn about their healthcare rights. Parents may want to watch both videos with their teenagers to spark discussion. For more information about AHI’s work to transform the landscape of adolescent healthcare, please see http://umhs-adolescenthealth.org/.
